City Seeds is a Humanim culinary social enterprise, dedicated to creating good jobs and growing small food businesses. Secretly hoping to be the best thing to happen to the Baltimore food scene since Old Bay, City Seeds quickly has become a force to reckoned with in the local food scene in Baltimore City.
With a focus on creating jobs and a passion for great food, City Seeds is building a strong community of food workers by giving folks, who may have fallen on hard times or have other barriers to entry, an opportunity to grow their skills and shine.
Everyone loves cookies! City Seeds might as well be the Cookie Monster, they love cookies so much. When it came time to package these tasty treats for distribution, minimizing breakage was a key factor in designing an elevated package that would enhance the overall experience digging into these pouches of goodness.
City Seed’s branding is inspired by vintage seed packages. This has never been more true than in our packaging for cookies and other grab and go food items.
Hot and cold cups for coffee, smoothies, yogurt parfaits, and veggie snacks were a must have for City Seeds.
Clear cups with white ink allowed for cold drinks and foods to elegantly stand out. Meanwhile, colorful patterned hot cups are cheerful and playful.
To spice up a rather ordinary fridge, we installed a little cut vinyl to the glass doors. The scallop border screens internal lighting, at the top of the door, from the customer.
The City Seeds Cafe kiosk was built to help bring healthy food options to different work spaces throughout Baltimore.
While the cart isn’t a permanent fixture to any one location, like other City Seeds Cafes, the bike and push cart can be separated from the kiosk to allow for the bike to take a spin around the block. The kiosk was designed with the help of the awesome folks at Gensler in Baltimore.
City Seeds’ Commercial Kitchen opened in October 2017 at the Baltimore Food Hub, in East Baltimore. The building is a large “tin can” that was designed by firm, Ziger/Snead Architects.
This signage concept expands on the idea of a “can of food” by graphically painting the facade and constructing a large strawberry sculpture, to demarcate the entrance to the building.
No kitchen is complete without a kitchen table to gather round.
We custom designed these tables, to be built from repurposed plywood with white recycled composite countertops. These tables were designed to eventually be used as training stations in the commercial kitchen, while staying true to the City Seeds brand.
Custom printed neck ties, with patterns of herbs and stripes, are worn by cafe attendants, with black aprons that are embroidered with the City Seeds logo.
Simple black City Seeds t-shirts are worn by kitchen workers and delivery drivers, while black knit polos with a embroidered City Seeds logo are worn by servers at City Seeds catered events.
Keeping things as simple as possible, the site for City Seeds uses bright splashes of color, an endless array of vintage botanical etchings of fruit and veggies, and playful illustrations to guide the user’s experience.
Whether looking for a caterer for your next event, finding a City Seeds Cafe location, or wanting to learn more about their mission, cityseeds.org is ready to go and cooking up a storm in their brand new kitchen.
Inspired by vintage seed packets, the City Seeds logo is simple, elegantly distressed with a slight inline stroke, and incorporated the Humanim “i”.
Since City Seeds is a Social Enterprise of their parent non-profit, Humanim, we had to include a nod to Humanim with their trademark “i”.
Occasionally, small flyers need to be handed out at events as well as posted at City Seeds Cafes + Kiosks for special promotions, job opportunities, and other announcements.
These flyers are small enough to be folded and put into a pocket, while also being cost effective and impactful. Topics for the flyers range from specials, new menu announcements, hiring adverts, and small statements about City Seed’s mission.
