Haiti Poster Project

After the massive earthquake hit Haiti on January 18th, 2010, a international poster project was established to help raise money for the organization Doctor’s Without Boarders. Artist were invited to design and print posters that focused on the disaster in Haiti and the many relief efforts.

I designed, hand-printed, and shipped over 15 posters to the project headquarters in San Diego, CA to be put on the official website to be sold.

Since Haiti is a French-speaking nation, I wanted to capture the spirit of the Haitian landscape by the using the visual language of French Toile. By hand drawing the word Haiti in a very condensed form and repeating the strokes at 90 degrees, I was able to create a Red Cross. The Red Cross carries many meanings including help, peace, relief, hope, injury and pain. And since this was an effort to raise money for support of doctors who would bring help, peace, relief, and hope as they relieve injury and pain, It made since to me to use the symbolism of such a powerful icon in my design.
