Currently under construction, milkandhoneybaltimore.com is for a new local Market and Deli in Mt.Vernon, Baltimore. This cool new hangout has an awesome Coffee Bar, Meat & Cheese department, locally grown produce counter, hand crafted deli sandwiches, and of course Milk & Honey.

This hip new grocery was much needed in Baltimore and is sure to be a predominant fixture in such an active revitalization of the historic Mt. Vernon district of Baltimore.

Hazel’s Vintage & Gifts, a small vintage clothing and gift boutique in Southern Mississippi, opened in 2008. The store was named in honor of the owner’s great-aunt Hazel. Hazel was as cooky as an owl and kept random stuff stored in her attic.

A pair of owls became the iconic symbol for Hazel’s. One owl was drawn to be used for men’s fashion while the other was for the ladies. The logo could be broken apart and used separately, or left alone and used jointly.

The logo ended up being just black and white so that the owner could use a rubber stamp to place the logo on tags, bags, and signage throughout the store and to stay on budget.

Midtown Baltimore is comprised of four neighborhoods, Mt. Vernon, Bolton Hill, Madison Park, and Charles North. Together, these neighborhoods form the cultural and educational center of Baltimore.

Each neighborhood have distinct features about them that comprise an area that capture the best parts of living and working in one of the best kept secrets on the east coast. Bolton Hill is full of tree lines streets, parks with water fountains, and quite row homes that are truly breathtaking. Charles North is alive with the arts with venerable institutions like the Charles Theater and Club Charles. Mount Vernon is one of the oldest parts of the city and is steeped in history and culture. The Washington Monument stands as the center piece to Mount Vernon as an internationally know icon to George Washington. Madison Park was once home to some of the wealthiest families in Baltimore and is now undergoing a resurgence of renovation, making it a thriving place to invest in and live.

The Midtown area needed a set of icons that could represent each of these different areas of the city. Iconic monuments and buildings seemed to be the perfect fit.

The MIdtown Community Benefits District, now simply Midtown Baltimore, wanted a new website that could be a hub for information about this thriving part of the city. The new site incorporates social media and dynamic feeds of information to keep the community informed of upcoming events, community issues, and recent news.

The website is currently under construction but should be up and running soon.

I had the privileged to work on the re-branding of The University of Southern Mississippi while I worked there in 2009. Above are several variations of the final logo that I designed. While I wasn’t able to see the final logo to completion, because of coming to grad school, the final logo is very similar to what I had designed.

The old university logo was not that bold and was actually a nightmare to print because of thin strokes and offset printing. The new illustration of the University’s Administration Building (dome), is more recognizable and visually heavier. With keeping with the University’s mission of being Creative, Bold , and Determined, the new mark is all three.

The dome illustration was a joint effort with co-worker May Molina.

To help increase school spirit for The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), Office of Communication at USM wanted to give kids in local area elementary and middle schools a poster with the word to the Southern Miss fight song on it. The type was hand drawn to make it more accessible and inviting to the younger students. The black and gold (bright yellow) type captures the university’s school spirit resembling hand made signs that are often found at Southern Miss football games and tail gate parties.

Located in historic Mt. Vernon in the heart of Baltimore, The Belvedere Grand Condominium offers gracious living, business opportunities and fine dining all in one. As you enter our world famous lobby, you are surrounded by elegance and over a century of history. Presidents, Roylaty and Hollywood’s most famous stars have frequented The Belvedere earning it the status of “The Crown Jewel” of Baltimore.

With a building as grand as The Belvedere, one would expect an on-line presence just as elegant and rich. In 1991 The Belvedere Hotel became The Belvedere Grand Condominiums. To help promote the lifestyle and opportunities that await at The Belvedere, they needed a new site to host information about the building, neighborhood, and Baltimore.

Approximately 90% of the photography on the website was taken by me to help accentuate the building.

You can visit The Belvedere’s website here.

Graphic Design Thinking is the newest book to be published by the Graphic Design MFA Program at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in conjunction with Princeton Architectural Press. The book was written, designed, and compiled by the graduate students in the GD MFA program with help from Ellen Lupton and Jennifer Cole Phillips who edited the final book.

This book focuses on different types of thought processes that designers can use to help inspire creativity and view their work differently. Each chapter is filled with valuable insight to real projects and how different designers brainstorm and create differently.

Each student had the opportunity to design options for the cover of the book to be pitched to the fine folks at Princeton. These two covers were submitted but ultimately not chosen for the publication.

In addition to designing possible covers, I co-wrote and designed several chapters of the book with classmate Ryan Shelley. Other chapters of the book include project examples that were designed by me as well.

When an animal dies and its flesh is gone, its spirit remains. I see these spirits as beautifully choreographed dances of insects representing animals that have died. Part of the cycle of life is that the dead provides nourishment to the living.

On the most basic level of nature, bugs and insects help out by cleaning carcasses and aiding in the decomposition of dead animals. While these animals may no longer be walking or flying, bugs and insects bring life back into their spirits. Eventually, even these bugs will be eaten by more animals and continue the cycle of life and reincarnation.

Incarnation was hand silk-screen printed in limited editions on white cotton rag paper as well as mono-printed on 3/4″ birch plywood.
